| HISTORY OF THE CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT |
|
The Clinique de la Dhuys was built in the town of Bagnolet by a group of private investors in 1971. Its activity was at first mainly centered on surgery. Little by little, from 1971 to 1978, under the influence of Dr Gilbert ZERAH, patients with heart problems were starting to be treated at the hospital. In 1975, the Clinique dedicated its first beds to cardiology. The Cardiology Department of the Clinique de la Dhuys had just been born. At the same time, the concept of "Intensive Care Unit of Cardiology" gradually imposed itself in the circles of Cardiology in France. In fact, the relative weakness of medical treatments, especially of myocardial infarction, led to acute and serious complications. The creation of personalized supervision and continuous medical care facilities by a specifically trained practitioner became necessary. It was logical to set up an Intensive Care Unit under the supervision of health authorities in 1981. The creation of this unit enabled a surer and more efficient care of the patients of the region. The first heart stimulators were implanted in the department in 1976. At the time, the "batteries" were imposing. The way they functioned was simple. A single stimulation lead was implanted and positioned at the apex of the heart. The type of lead which was then used didn't offer any choice in the stimulation site. The heart stimulator would prevent heart frequency from going below a programmed frequency. Dr Gilbert ZERAH's increasing interest for rhythm disorders and conduction led him to leave France for several months in 1983. He followed a training in Rhythmology in the United States. After spending some time overseas, he decided to focus the activity of the Department on the care of patients with heart arrhythmias. |
In 1989, technology was moving fast and heart stimulators with "double chambers" enabled to finally stick to heart physiology. In 1992, the Clinique de la Dhuys (and the Cardiology Department, as a consequence) underwent a fundamental change in its evolution. A lot was invested to expand the Cardiology Department and obtain an independant technical unit with its own premises including a follow-up department, an echocardiography laboratory, a stress test and telemetry room. An operating room was dedicated to the implantation of heart stimulators and electrophysiological explorations. At the same time as heart stimulation was advancing rapidly in the care of heart conduction disorders, the development of fulguration and radiofrequency insured the permanent cure of some heart rhythm disorders. The first radiofrequency was operated by the department in 1994. The indications have considerably widened since then. A great number of patients benefits from this technique. The third Millennium will see the rise of multi-site pacing. In September 2001, the first implant was performed with success on a patient. After taking care of "vertical" disorders of heart conduction, we can now treat inter- or intra-ventricular desynchronization of heart conduction for people with cardiac insufficiency. In a word, the history of our department has started a while back and is far from being over. The years to come hold the promise of new technological evolutions which are necessary to the well-being of our patients. |
