I was born into a family of musicians. Despite my efforts to learn the piano, I quickly realized I was not talented enough to make a living out of it. Playing the piano still remains my favorite hobby. At school, I was captivated by natural science and biology. Discovering how the human body worked was fascinating to me. It was a real pleasure to learn what we had seen in class and I often got the best grades in those subjects.

It was just logical to follow through in Medical School. I soon wanted to specialize in cardiology, with its highly scientific dimension.

In 1981, after finishing my medicine degree course, I had the opportunity to do my hospital training as an intern in the Cardiology Department of the Clinique de la Dhuys created a few years earlier by Dr Gilbert Zerah. It was an unforgettable experience which strengthened my desire to pursue my studies in that field.

I carried my studies in the Cardiology Department of Professeur P. E. Valère at the Hôpital Bichat and, after that, at the Hôpital Beaujon. He was an incomparable master who taught us precise reasoning without ever setting aside the human aspect of medical practice. He was among the pioneers of rhythmology and conveyed his passion to me while he made me work on the electrophysiological exploration of syncopes. My training was completed when I obtained my degree in rhythmology.

With my wide ranging experience, I came first in my year.

The evolution of rhythmology has been spectacular. Taking part in its progress for 25 years has been a marvelous experience. The improvements in the understanding of rhythm disorder and its treatment have been huge. Technology has gone far beyond what we could imagine. To quote a few examples of major scientific developments, I have witnessed the considerable changes in heart stimulators, the appearance of defibrillators, fulguration and radiofrequency, the technique of multisite pacing in heart failure.

I joined the Clinique de la Dhuys in 1989 and I was able to participate in the growth of the Cardiology Department and, more particularly, the Rhythmology unit. We were given any means necessary to make this department one of the finest in France: highly qualified and specifically trained staff, large premises adapted to our needs, high technology equipment put at our disposal, support from the biomedical companies; all these enabled us to achieve optimal quality in our work.

Much progress has yet to come and even if the burden of administrative pressure is constantly increasing, I am eager to pursue this amazing adventure.
