Gilbert Zerah

After studying at the Paris Medical School (Faculté de Médecine de Paris), and after passing the entrance examination to the Assistance Publique de Paris, I chose to specialize in cardiology both on my masters' advice and for filial love.

In 1968, the only cardiology examination was the electrocardiogram. But afterwards, this speciality considerably developed technically, as far as explorations and treatment are concerned.
I focused on a brand new field of cardiology: the hemodynamic exploration of the heart, as I worked with some great teams of the public hospitals (AP-HP).
Fortified by my experience and my first results, I opened the Cardiology Department of la Dhuys as soon as 1976.

This is how, in 1981, on my own initiative, an ICU of Cardiology was created. At the time, a team of cardiologists was by my side in this wonderful adventure in the private sector.
Rhythmology was just beginning to develop in the United States and in France. Advantages for our patients soon became obvious to me.

The future fulfilled all my hopes: interventional catheterism, multi-site pacing, defibrillator and other novelties reinforced my beliefs.

By 1984, after an internship in the United States, I had set up a unit of rhythmology at the Clinique de la Dhuys and created a methodology for surgical operation with the help of my co-workers.

Many heart surgeons from the US, Europe or Africa came to work by our side to learn from our surgical technique.

At the same time, I have always done my best, during my post-graduate teachings, to demonstrate the relevance of rhythmology through numerous scientific publications, booklets on pacemakers aimed at patients and videos on surgical techniques.

The Clinique de la Dhuys is now a local and regional reference, which is to me a great source of pride. Daily practice is crucial. Innovation and research are the main preoccupations of our team.
