Mr J, 66
"I have been seeing a cardiologist since I had an infarction 8 years ago. For several months, I had been feeling tired. It was hard for me to go up the stairs of my pavilion. The last time I saw the cardiologist, he had me wear a "Holter". It is a recording of your cardiac rhythm over 24 hours. It turned out that my heart stopped every once in a while and that I had a low heart frequency which did not increase much during the day. He even said that my heart was sometimes beating at a rate of 25/mn! He took me an appointment with a cardiologist from the clinic to have a battery set for me. I saw the cardiologist from the clinic and he explained that a short hospitalization was necessary.

The anesthetist I saw explained that I would be awake during the intervention and that he would put me to sleep only if the local anesthesia was not enough. I came in the day before the intervention. On the morning of the intervention, I took a shower with a disinfecting soap. The nurses set me a perfusion with antibiotics. The intervention didn't take long. In the end, the anesthetist didn't even have to put me to sleep completely. I went back home after a few days. I feel a lot less tired since. I climb up the steps more easily. My cardiologist was able to take up the treatment with the recommended doses. I only go back to the clinic to check the battery. I keep on hunting like before."

Mrs H, 75
"As I was shopping in the neighborhood, I started fainting. I don't remember anything, only the firemen around me when I woke up. At first, I didn't understand what was happening to me. The doctor told me that my heart had stopped beating then had started again. Since it was still too slow, he told me I was taken to a clinic to set up a battery. I was hospitalized in intensive care. I was worried because heart surgery was frightening to me. The cardiologist came to see me. He confirmed that I had to have a pacemaker set, and he explained what was going to happen. It reassured me a little. In the afternoon, they came to take me to the operating room. I found the cardiologist that I had seen in intensive care. The surgery went perfectly well. I didn't feel anything, just the anesthetic shot at the very beginning. I could talk to the doctor during the whole surgical act. It reassured me. I stayed in bed until the next morning. After a few days of supervision, I went back home.

I come back every six months to check the battery. I have never had a stroke since. I have had the battery for 4 years. You can hardly see the scar any more."

Mr G, 83
"I had felt malaises coming/ like fainting several times. One day, as I was going out into my garden, I passed out. My kids took me to the hospital. At the hospital, they sent me to the clinic for an examination. Once I was hospitalized at the clinic, the cardiologist explained to me that he wanted to check my electrical network by setting a lead into my heart. The examination showed I needed a pacemaker because the current didn't go from the top to the bottom part of the heart very well. They gave me papers to sign, the information and the consent sheets, which explained how and why I needed surgery. I had other examinations before the surgery. The doctors implanted the battery. The surgical act lasted 35 mn. I spent a whole week in hospital because I had trouble getting over my fall. I didn't go straight back home. I went to a convalescent home. Today, I'm fine. I go to a cardiologist not far from home but I go back to the clinic every now and then to check on the battery."
